Turn down exhaust tips

Has anyone installed the Malibu turn down exhaust tips who can address whether they reduce the exhaust smell, (carbon dioxide) for the surfers?

 Thanks!

Downturns won't do anything to help with CO.  They're for noise reduction only.  The closer to the water you run them, the quieter they are, but they're still putting the exhaust above the waterline.  Only FAE which puts it into the prop wash will get the exhaust out behind your surfer.  But then it's right in your kids' faces when you're pulling tubes... :)

I'm going to add them this fall. It should reduce emissions somewhat for us because of lots of trunk ballast.

Only worry is hydrolock from water backup without the flaps

I went from flappers to the STE (silent tip exhaust, the factory Malibu turn-down with baffles) and then to FAE (Fresh Air Exhaust).  If you want to reduce fumes/CO, get an FAE.

"Should" = won't.  Been there, done that, 1100's in each rear locker, at the time ~3000 total ballast + floating wedge (little more now).  It will be quieter, but not as quiet as the FAE and will not reduce fumes at the back of the boat.

I don't surf, so I can't answer about the fumes, but I switched from flappers to factory turn-downs with baffles several years ago and have not noticed any sort of problem when in reverse.  I do have a direct drive with mufflers, though.

I installed them on my direct drive.  Maybe I don't notice it, but we have zero issues with fumes when surfing and our pocket is small so we are close to the platform.  I don't remember it being any better or worse than with the flappers.

The STE's are definitely quieter.

I recently made up some ghetto turned down tips on my DD to see if the chrome tips would be worth it.    Big improvement in noise and no more exhaust smell while surfing.

Glad I watched the video.    My hull has the stepped transom so changing the tips would be a total PITA.     The fish will laugh at me but whatever.

Great information....

I am a noob here... we just upgraded to our first Malibu at the end of summer; only 3rd year on the water.  Have been learning with an I/O.

We noticed the fumes while surfing.  My dilemma, family and friends do plenty of wakeboarding, skiing, surfing (new to us) and tubing.  I read that the fumes do breach the water at a later point, would they be in the face of kids on the tube?

Huge Thanks!!!

Nope, the exhaust gets mixed with the water and slowly bubbles up; assuming you're driving slow the tube will be well past it before it's an issue.  You can see the exhuast when you drive...

Great perspective Ben! I love when people "show" actual answers.

At others, Not sure I understand how reverse could ever suck water when the boat is always pushing it?

I removed the quiet rider muffler just last week and am shopping for two 30" pieces of silicone 3.5", to replace for better impeller access. Will post pics once complete.

Water generally doesn't get sucked in, it gets driven in.  Yes, some exhaust /cooling water could get sucked in depending on the cam in the engine, but let's assume that the risers are tall enough to prevent that.

Try this: run your boat on plane, then shut off the engine.  Water will get pushed up the pipes as the boat comes to rest (it is surfing its own wake).  This could happen if the engine dies for some reason.  It could also happen if you are just floating and a boat drives by with a substantially large wake that hits your stern.

The turn-down tips are baffled inside to slow down water, and the shape of the tip helps deflect most water that tries to come in from behind.
