Skinny on South Lake Tahoe boating?

Recommended Posts

Starting to plan a last minute trip to Lake Tahoe and might take the boat. What are the best options for keeping the boat in the water for a week? We have access to a place in South Lake Tahoe so we would prefer to use facilities near there. Can you launch it, anchor a buoy off shore, tie off, and paddle in to a dock or beach? What else should we be considering?

I don’t know about leaving your boat in the water, but be prepared to have your ballast  tanks rinsed out and pay a fee everyday to use the boat ramp.

I think it’s like 75 to 100 bucks to have them rinsed out with super hot water.

They will tag your boat at the ramp  when you pull off. If the tag is still there when you launch the next day you don’t have to flush your ballast

For sure good point!  I’ve been on that lake and it went from really nice and by the time I had my boat out of the water it was like  4 foot waves!  Be careful leaving it in the water.

We always stay at the keys.  They rent slips b the day and the week but I know there are waitlists currently depending on when you go.  Tahoe is fantastic, especially early in the am and at susnset.  It can be rough mid-day.  The best 'calm' water you will find is against the west shore, just south and north of the emerald bay entrance, through Meeks and Rubicon Bay.

As mentioned above, you CANNOT launch into Tahoe without going to one of the three approved inspection stations.  Normally they are drive up service, but because of COVID they are reservation only and are booked solid for the next month or so.

Have fun.
