Can you use silicone hose for wet exhaust? Also a 90 bend question.

Recommended Posts

Had my lower hose slice from the clamp on my 2005 VLX a week after doing a muffler delete and FAE. It’s about 2 feet of hose with a 90 degree bend in the middle. It’s 3.5 ID corrugated marine wet exhaust hose, and it’s out of stock all over.

skidim says you can use Any 3.5 marine wet exhaust hose (If you can find it) and it will bend the 90 degrees.

bakes sells a pre bent hose but they are 150 each and I likely want to do both. With expedited shipping that’s a ton of money.

I also found a company in California that sells a silicone hose bent at 90 degrees that they claim will work in wet exhaust and the price is right. Performance is better than rubber. However they are not corrugated and I don’t know how much support is needed.

does the crew think silicone might work? Anyone with experience on this one?

in the photo it’s the lower hose.

I believe there are several who have used them with FAE conversions.  They are certainly temp rated.

Once I looked into all the special cable clamps required (so they don't cut the silicone) The price got super near the price for the OEM part from Bakes so I did Bakes.

My nagging concern with the Silicone was whether it was structurally sound enough. After removing the part yesterday, I don't think that would be an issue so long as you delete the muffler. I believe with the muffler still installed I would be more concerned.

The original part lasted 15 years so hopefully I can get another 15.

EDIT: The can coozie in the picture got me to the boat launch! :) Lucky me my lift cross cable broke that morning so I had to get it on the trailer.

I have them on my engine, no problems going on 4 years.  Temp-wise they are fine.  But they are very bendy, if there is any weight on them they will not support it.

Do you remember where you bought them and what clamps you used?

No idea where I bought them, some car place on line.  I'll see if I can find out.  For clamps I just used SS hose clamps from a local plumbing supply place.

Hey I just checked in my pile of boat parts and found two sections of 3.5" hose that are about 2 feet long each.  Do you want them?  They are left over from when I redid my exhaust a few years ago, brand new never been used.

If bakes doesn't make it in time definitely, but the indmar pre bent hoses should be here tomorrow. Thanks for the offer! I will PM or text you if I need them

Damn it! I need (2) 30" pieces. Literally talking to a couple silicone outfits about straight vs pre-bent.\Took my muffler out to straight pipe it.

After using it for the summer, I feel like I am losing some power based on the muffler delete but not a ton of it. I know the FAE drops power some too. It could also be a prop ding or something. I don't want to go back to mufflers though because of how much more room there is now for maintenance and winterization.

Agh!  I ended up throwing them away.

Lack of exhaust scavenging maybe with the two sides no longer connected until the end?

I know it's a bit off-topic, but I feel compelled to post this here after getting a tip from a peer. If you're looking to do a muffler delete and don't want to go with hose from the headers to the scuppers, there is a stainless option available from Summit Racing:

https://www.summitracing.com/nv/parts/sum-622130

This is on my list of projects to do in the off season, but I've got a long list. I'll start a thread if I'm able to get to the project. The price for the stainless from Summit (with some short pieces of rubber hose) looks to be better than going with full-length rubber exhaust hose.

Yes, but the angle is much closer to a 45degree, not a 90. I will post pics soon I am doing it this week.

I'm working on this as well. I was going to order some 45* stainless mandrel.

Is it 3.5" both at the exhaust riser and the 90* rubber at the transom?

I haven't been able to remove the muffler to measure.
