Do older Malibu's have a "Limp" mode?

Recommended Posts

A buddy and I have recently purchased a 1994 Echelon for slalom skiing and bare-footing.  We knew she needed some "love" when we purchased her.  We've been making great strides and "knocking things off our to-do list" for sure.  She's been running pretty well the last 2 weeks.  With that said, yesterday we had an issue where the motor seemed to go into some type of "Limp" mode.  It would not go above 2400-2600 RPM.  It would run great up to that RPM range and then essentially, a shut-off type governor would kick in. It wouldn't shut the boat off entirely, but would reduce it back to idle RPM/speed.  As soon as you accelerated or while in neutral revved the motor to the same 2400-2600 RPM it would do it again.  Strangely enough, we didn't think to shut it entirely off and/or disconnect the battery when it happened.  (Just wanted to be sure we made it back to the dock!)  After it sat off for about 30 minutes, it ran perfectly.    Any thoughts or suggestions on this "gremlin" is greatly appreciated!
