Dual battery bond

Just purchased a neat 07 vlx which I need t do a few mods to..

1st  mod is a second battery to allow the boat to run off and one battery to crank the engine .. I’m wondering if owners have mounted the second one beside the standard battery in the left rear locker

2nd is to fit a larger amp alternator , is there an off the shelf chev one that fits the 320 motor ? Being in Australia our parts range is pretty limited boat wise , can get car /chev stuff easily

cheers Luke

Ill start with this, PLEASE  do not use an automotive alternator. It needs to be a marine specific alternator with flame arrester.

Locating the battery close to the existing battery is great to keep cables short. If you do locate else where its just a mater of longer cables of the appropriate gauge.

Are the alternator bolt pattern / mounts all the same on the later model chevs/indmars ? I maybe able to get one built if I can’t find a replacement

They are the same alternators, the marine ones have some screens in them.  Dbelectrical is a good source.

Get those batteries out of the locker.  Worst place for them - that's where you put your ballast bags.  I have mine mounted under the observer seat (did AGM's so no need for a box...barely fit but no better place to put a battery).  Use a ACR with stereo on one battery and the rest of the boat on the other.
