Remove decals?

Recommended Posts

I have an O2 vlx and would like to get all the decals off except the center Malibu oval. Anyone that’s done that have any tips or warnings about how to remove, and how it will look if I get the decals off?

thanks!

Heat gun to warm up adhesive. Peel easy after that. You may need to do some buffing and polishing to fade the ghosting you might have. I remove all of mine when I got the boat. They were damaged and I had some oxidation that was much easier to take care of with out them.

hey thanks jrvs23!

quick search on Amazon shows many different wattages of heat guns, do you know if any of them will do (I don't want to get anything too hot and do any damage)?

bought one with adjustable heat range.  I am a little concerned about ghost image since it is on the black part, but the gelcoat is still glossy and in great shape so I think I can buff out any leftovers.

Ok heat gun works as described; what’s best cleaner to remove the adhesive?  That stuff is really sticky!

Goo off works wonders with removing adhesive. If you're going to give a nice polish and wax right after, possible compound, I wouldn't be worried about using goo off.

OK thanks blacknbu - is it the same as goo gone?

Same stuff. The orange liquid isnt as harsh as the clear stuff that's in a metal can.

Well I now own a heat gun, a polisher, and goo gone. Now that I’ve confirmed this crap would tow a car, I think I’ll just remover the decals, then pay for a whole boat wet sand job. I don’t think it’s been done to this get coat yet, so it’s time for it!
