Temp is up and engine feels warmer.

Recommended Posts

So the last few outings I’ve noticed the temp creeping up.   It’s been at 160 ever since I’ve owned it but now today it’s hitting 180 and the engine is actually feeling warmer.   Valve covers are a bit hot for the 3 second test.   This is new as I am constantly opening my engine hatch.  Even use the engine to keep food warm.

I recently changed out impeller and cleaned tranny cooler among other normal services.    Ordered up a new thermostat right after I noticed the higher temp (which was 170 at the time)   Should I change out the circulation pump while I’m at it?

Would a failing thermostat make a noticeable difference in overall engine temp?

Didn’t get a chance to hit it with the infrared temp gage but it’s now in the boat in case we go out tomorrow.

Thanks for any info.

What @Eagleboy99 said.  If the new thermostat and a good back flush doesn't fix it, at least now you can also cook chicken thighs on it!

This is exactly how I knew the engine was hotter than normal!!

It was a culinary disaster!

At the risk of offending, what is going on with your string of bad luck?

That's not luck Boz.

It did on my 2011 LCR indmar. I was running up to 175-180 and once the thermostat was changed I am pegged back at 160 again.

Changed out thermostat and gaskets.   Same temps and engine is hotter than usual.    Taking temps around engine average in the 130s.    Temp gauge went to 200 after a short shutdown but quickly went to 170.

I’m going to check the circulation pump next.

Removed the belt.   Circulation pump seems ok without removing.   Spins free, no slop in the shaft and no unusual noises.   Will start looking for blockage now.

It is normal to see the temperature spike after shutting down the engine. I think it is called heat soak.   Not a concern as long as it drops when you start it.

Remove, inspect, and reseat all of the raw water hoses from the inlet to the raw water pump, and make sure the pump plate has a good gasket.  A small air leak can cause a lot of trouble.

Checked all hoses and connections.   Removed circulation pump and can’t find any reason to replace it.   Turns smooth, no evidence of leaks and all the vanes appear in tact from what I can see (removed back plate)  Seawater pump impeller is new and 100% in tact (removed it).   All hoses had water in them and drained the block with no problems.

Will give it a go tomorrow on the lake.

Do you have a heater? Electric Circ Pump?

As the temp starts to rise is this only at idle? If so, does bumping the throttle bring it right back down?

No heater and no other pump.

Idle is ok.    It’s after driving and surfing.   Throttle bump does nothing.

Taking it out tomorrow to get some detailed info and temps.

Well out on the lake and all seems back to normal.   After an hour of running with a bunch of WOT passes the temp is 170 and no excessive heat from the engine.

Probably a blockage.    The circulation pump had plenty of buildup so maybe a good idea to replace.

Thanks for all the help!!  This forum is great!
