Ok I need some help trouble shooting. Have a 2006 vlx and put a new motor in. It sat for 3 years so we pumped out old fuel changed fuel filter and it runs great up to 3500rpm and then it starves. It almost acts like it hits a rev limiter but once in a great while it will accelerate up to 4500-5k but most of the time it spits and sputters   New fuel regulator, pump is good and we cleaned it out too   New plug wires are coming this week but thought I’d get some input or see if anyone else has ran into this   Thanks!

Fuel injectors need to be cleaned and rebuilt. You can have send them off to be rebuilt and mapped before and after.

Fuel injectors are a good place to start for sure.  Would look to get a fuel pressure gauge on the engine and run it on the lake to see that the fuel pressure is up to snuff.  What you're describing could also possibly be an ICM.  I think that engine still had one of those.  Does your distributor look like an old school distributor with all the connections on the top, or does it look like a crab with connectors all on the sides?

OK.  Coughing and sputtering at mid rpms and higher can be a lot of things.  Ignition Control Module is often one of those things in older boats, but I'm not sure if the ignition system in yours had one of those or if it was problematic.  Something to keep in the back of your mind.

Injectors plugged could very well be it if it's been sitting a while.  Also, don't discount the idea of it being fuel lines.  If it sat for 3 years with ethanol blend fuel in the lines, those could be degraded internally and killing your flow rate.

The engine not coming up to proper temperature, or a faulty coolant temperature sensor would cause the ECM to limit RPM's.

It comes up to temperature perfectly and runs right at 160 all day unless you idle for a while and it will drop to 150 or so

Are you positive that your coolant sensor for the dash gauge is the same as for the ECM?  On older models there are 2 separate sensors.
