Popping sound when accelerating

Recommended Posts

Hi, can anyone refer me to a good thread regarding popping sounds when accelerating?  I'm not sure if this is a backfire (e.g. fuel firing in the exhaust system) or what.  Didn't start happening until several hours into a day of surfing and only one or two pops during idle or acceleration.

I changed the spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor, last year and did not fog the engine during my last winterization (I believe it is dry enough where I am to do that).  It's possible that some fuel stabilizer is still in the tank-- maybe the mixture is still very rich??

More detail would be helpful, specific engine configuration, hours on engine?  Given the year you note, I suggest a compression test and probably a leak down test.  One of the firsts signs of a head gasket failure on a small block GM engine is popping sounds through the intake.  Hopefully not that and something much simpler.

Listen to @Woodski on this one!  I had the exact same symptoms, and it did end up being a head gasket, which failed and caused me to detonate a piston.  That killed my summer plus the next one and put me out a lot of $$.  If I had done the leakdown test I would have caught it.

A compression test and a fuel pressure test may be a good place to start.  Of course, it could be as simple as a couple switched spark plug wires.

gotcha.  and by a couple of switched spark plugs do you mean replacing them?

@wakesetterDD I believe that what @csleaver means is that you could possibly have a couple of spark plug wires switched (on the wrong plugs), so you should check that they are all where they should be

Ok thanks.  I switched the plugs and wires last year and have been running Since with generally no popping Until lately as far as I can remember so I hope they are ok but will check again.  Thanks!

TMC is the best!
