Save Money with alternates

So i was curious if anyone else has stumbled upon "alternative parts" to save money on their boat repairs? For example, i learned two instances on my 1988 Malibu skier.

-Mercruiser circulating water pump cost $100+/ A 1967 Chevelle water pump with brass fitting to plug heater hose line insert cost only $45 and is the same thing

-A Mercruiser 32-8M0062614 coolant hose cost usually $60 shipped/ 2 NAPA 7623 hoses replace this and cost $25

my 89 skier needed a alternator, I found a website called DB Electrical they have a Marine alternator after tax for our boats for $85, there good alternators from what I've seen so far and read up on.  everything else I found was 300 plus
