1996 Alternator

Recommended Posts

I've replaced my alternator multiple times recently with off-brand 1-wire auto part store versions. Each time swapping the spark arrestor on to the new one. I had one fail right away, the store replaced it and say the new one tests good but on the boat it only makes 3 Volts at about 5000 rpms.

Things I've measured

  • Wire from alternator to starter good continuity with no short to ground
  • batteries test good after full charge
  • with all wires removed from alternator and boat running it makes under 3 Volts
  • with wires connected clamp over current meter shows nothing

Does it make sense the alternator just doesn't work on the boat?

Do you believe the stock alternator would fix this problem?

Does anyone know what the stock alternator is?

You probably won't get a proper output from the alternator if it doesn't have battery voltage applied.  The battery provides field current, which creates a magnetic field.

Test with a battery hooked up, and do not disconnect it while the engine is running or you could blow the regulator.

Just to round out this thread for everyone. I ended up purchasing the following.

https://www.myinboardmarine.com/products/mando-55-amp-marine-alternator-pcm-gm-v-belt-pulley?_pos=2&_sid=0e22cfc85&_ss=r

The tech support at my inboard marine was awesome. They listened to me ramble about the tests I had performed and agreed it was probably the alternator. They then called Indmar to make sure they were getting me the correct part, and with there standard shipping it got it to me in 2 days!

The boat is now running great!
