‘02 sunscape EFI no start

Recommended Posts

My nephew was launching their boat yesterday and was getting no joy.

motor turns over, but no fire.

some symptoms:

1) no alarm beep when key is turned to “on”

2) no audible fuel pump sound

3) tach doesn’t move when turning over (but am unsure if tach works anyway)

indmar manual says to check the crankshaft position switch. I told him to disconnect and check the wires for corrosion first.

Other options?

Engine will not crank only if not in neutral.  Will crank if lanyard switch is tripped.

How do you bypass the lanyard switch?

There are a pair of purple wire spade connectors on the back of the lanyard switch.  Jumper those together.

Interesting on the crank position sensor.  I know there is a sensor installed on my boat, but there's nothing connected to it.  Didn't think they started using that until they went MEFI4 in 2003.

We’ll find out if there’s a crank position sensor.  Either its there or I just sent my nephew on a wild goose chase!

I was going with lanyard switch, but I thought that the engine doesn’t crank and found the crankshaft thing in the manual.

It will crank but will not fire.

Yep.  I do that all the time when I want to crank with no fire.

Yup great for getting the last bit of water out of the water pump while the J Hose is off or when I squirt a little bit of dawn to pull the impeller.  Those two reasons are reason the only reason I haven’t bypassed the switch yet.
