Transmission leak at vent cap

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I was running my 5.7L Monsoon 325 with ZF Hurth transmission on the lift to check it out for the season/troubleshoot a hesitation issue and discovered the Hurth was purging fluid through the vent cap upon letting off the throttle. It had been running at idle for awhile and the engine temp had been stable for ~10 minutes before I tried moderate throttling (drive gear disengaged, if that wasn’t obvious).

Does anyone know if this is an indication of fluid level being too high? Or an artifact of throttling without load? I don’t typically do this, but wanted to try to re-create the hesitation issue.

Thanks,

Will

Too much ATF or possibly and hopefully not, water mixed in with the ATF. If it is not a strawberry shake when you check the fluid level it was probably just over filled with ATF.

Definitely no water - I replaced all the seals I could get to at the end of last season and refilled. No water in the bilge since before then.

My next question: should the reading be taken with the threaded cap simply touching the threads or actually tightened down? I’ve always done the former

Threaded cap touching threads not tightened down but the transmission has to be up to temp.
