Steering Loose at low speeds

Recommended Posts

Last week I rode over an old piece of rope that wrapped around the driveshaft and was slapping against the rudder.  Since then I have some vibration at launch and while docking at slow speed.  Any advice on what to check or how to fix for this rookie.  Its an 07 23 LSV

Normally I would say you messed the prop up. But you are saying that you feel the vibrations at low speed not high speed which is typically where prop issues become more pronounced. Have you run it up to speed to confirm that the issue is only at docking and idle speeds?

I only feel it during the hole shot while surfing and I felt it yesterday after a long mothers day cruise and we we're docking in the wind which made me loop around 3 time to get it lined up.  yes I'm new at this.  At high speed its smooth as silk.  I checked the prop and I have some very small dings

Hole shot vibration = cavitation most likely. If you picked up the rope pulling out that would explain the vibration in that instance. I would take her out again and replicate the ballast and wedge set up to confirm. As soon as you pull it off of the trailer will most likely confirm that the rope was or wasn't the issue then. If so, I would bet on cavitation. The few small pencil lead sized knicks/dings shouldn’t cause a low speed vibration. But they may based on how big they really are. These props are sensitive to “change”.

Sounds like prop issue. You could also give the rudder a good shake to see if its loose.

Ill check the rudder while its up on my boat lift.
