Best Rope Knots / Fender Tricks

Getting my new fenders all rigged up and trying to come up with the best knot that I’m not going to have to worry about slipping or coming loose. What do you all do here?

I will admit that I generally don't use fenders, but

1) I *really* like your boat colors, and the fact that you got matching rope and fenders; and

2) I can't see putting a knot in a rope that I can't get out after it has gotten wet and dried, or maybe put under stress.  That means I use a bowline for a great many things, and if I need a free loop, it's an alpine butterfly.  For a tensioned loop (like tying something down), it's a trucker's hitch.  They all come out no matter what happened to them.

Are you sure this thread isn't about the color-coordinated rope and fenders?

Ha! It was legitimately about the knot & fenders as I’ve been struggling with it. But I am pretty thrilled with how it all came together.

End of the line bowline with a half hitch for most applications and a Prusik knot when I know I will need to adjust the rope length being used. I use the Prusik when I have to adjust the line length for the sand spike due to the water level fluctuations. It keeps me from having to dig up and reposition then spike multiple times during any given period. For my BABZ fenders I ended up sewing some flat 1” nylon straps with friction buckles that I use stand alone on the Phender Pros to be able to adjust to what ever height the other docking surface that I am tying up to. Max coverage and protection what ever the surface is.

Using knots like bowlines and clove hitches makes sense.  You definitely want a knot that you can “break” once they get wet, sun dried and tightened.

If at all possible I keep my lines and fenders stand alone. That way the ropes can’t move the fenders and keep them from doing their jobs. I have the BABZ and love them and my old 2 piece flats that I use to fill in the blanks if needed. 762DE691-D227-4EE7-A4EA-6F7798B6B5A7.thumb.jpeg.5f8a4e58ad04dd9eb745ce3eccd2224a.jpeg
