Forgot to Change Oil Filter

Recommended Posts

I did a boneheaded thing when I winterized my boat in the fall and changed my oil.  I got rushed and distracted (I blame my father in law) and I forgot to change the oil filter before filling the oil.  I figured I would leave it go over winter and deal with it in the spring when I summerize.  Should I change the filter right away or do you think I would be good to let it go?  If I change the filter I will need to drain the oil and change that to or reuse it?  Can I just pull the filter out of the canister and change it that way (probably too messy)?  I have the 2017 Raptor 410 engine so I have the canister filter.

If it has the cannister assembly on top of the engine like my M5, I would just pull the old filter out and swap in the new one. If you haven't run it since winterizing there should be just a little oil left in the cannister to be concerned with. With my M5 the bigger concern for me is actually not dropping the new filter in to the cannister. What little oil that is in there splashes out if I accidently drop it in instead of slowly putting it in.
