Houseboat Generator Fuel System Question

Recommended Posts

OK, so not Malibu but maintenance question.

Westerbeke 14 kW generator, high pressure fuel system (Gas).  To change the fuel filters, the manual says to relive the system pressure.  There is a Schrader valve in the line.

Do i just press it, like a tire valve, to relive pressure? Do i need special tools or something to catch any fuel leakage?  The manual has some info, but it's not totally clear to me.

According to www.itstillruns.com...

Relieving Pressure with the Test-Port Valve

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Search for the Schrader valve on the fuel rail around the top of the engine.
  2. Unscrew the valve cap if there is one.
  3. Wrap one or more shop rags around the port valve to catch the squirt of fuel that will come out as you depressurize the system.
  4. Push the valve in using a small screwdriver until fuel stops pouring through the valve.
  5. Replace the test-port valve cap.
