Best Surf Wave T23 vs A22

Raleigh

Recommended Posts

My vehicle tow weights got me down. Suburban 4x4 only will do 5,000 pounds so it’s back to my standby 7,200 pound with WDH Jeep. This leaves the A24 a bit over the weight capacity and I don’t want to chance it for safety.

So... I’m left to the T22/T23 and the A22. Any feedback on the best wave for the weight for these Axis boats? The T23 is my first choice but with the 17inch prop coming on a redesign I’m leaning A22 for resale. Am I giving up much with the A22?

mines for sale (not yet listed) if interested.  13 hours.  loaded up moderately including white tower, surf storage bimini, SP2, heater, etc..  azure metallic.  apparently my membership lapsed so I can't receive pms but I'll fix that today.

That all sounds great. Where are you located?

I haven't ridden behind a T23 so this is purely speculation but given the extra weight (500lbs) and length of the T23, I'd imagine the wave is at the very least a bit longer but probably a bit better overall than the A22 with similar ballast setups. That being said, based on a full season behind my '19 A22, I can't imagine ever needing more of a wave unless you are very picky. Same goes for the wakeboard wake. Even for a pro, the A22 is still plenty.

But here's something that might be more important to think about...In all of the Axis literature, the '19 A22 is listed 4500lbs dry weight (several things not included in this number). Add another 12-1400lbs for the trailer and that puts you to 57-5900lb. I actually had my boat/trailer weighed on a scale this summer with a full tank of gas, very minimal gear and empty ballast and it was 6500lbs. I pull it with a 2013 Tundra Crewmax with the tow package and 5.7L V8. It has a tow rating of around 9000lbs. Even for my truck, this boat is a load, especially climbing the mountain passes in our area. Braking, handling etc. is not a problem, however.

The '19 T23 is listed at 5000lb dry weight but has a 65 gallon gas tank vs 42 or 48 gallon in the A22 (CARB still lists the 2019 A22 tank as 42 gallons even though Axis says 48). So, either way, you are adding at least 100lbs in fuel vs the A22 if you pull the T23 with a full tank. Therefore, with a T23 and full tank of gas, you're likely pulling right near the top of your Jeep's capability. A22 is still gonna be a load but at least gives you about a 600lb reduction. For some, that doesn't matter. I know a guy who was towing his 2018 MB Sports B52 23 with a Toyota Tacoma that had like a 6000lb rating, so to each their own. But for me, I need my truck to last, so I don't want to shorten it's life too much by pulling too heavy. Good luck with the decision.

Raleigh,

I'll be able to PM you soon.  sorry!

All good. No decisions made yet. Talking to a few folks now. Ideally I’d hold off until March/April. I’m needing to sell my current vessel but I’m down for the right boat.
