Steering Issues

Recommended Posts

2007 23 lsv. Steering got real stiff. I went back to work had the steering cable replaced and just got back home to use the boat and steering is just as stiff as before. I greased the rutter box also. What else could I look at to solve my issues. Also steering wheel is off center and guessing that’s from the install of the cable and they didn’t care to correct that or diagnose issues before putting a new cable on it. How can I correct my issues I’m currently having? Thanks

You may have too much grease in the rudder or a bent rudder

Re off center: there is an adjustment on the steering cable near the rudder or pull the cable off at the steering wheel, reset the steering wheel to straight and re install the cable

Thanks for the reply. I owned this boat for over a year now. I never greased the rutter box until recently when the tight steering issues showed sign. I replaced the prop because I had the 537 and could not surf with extra ballast. Prior to that is when I noticed the steering issues. At that time I pumped 2 times in each zert. All the way up to now the boat would steer with ease.

Maybe your rudder box cracked. It happened to my 1990 after we started surfing it. The rudder box was a bad casting.

Disconnect your cable and figure out where the bind is.

Is it easy to steer when there's no load?

This.  Disconnect the cable at the tiller and move the steering wheel and the rudder by hand.
