Ekim

Recommended Posts

New to boating world... Just purchased a 2000 Malibu sunsetter! loving the boat so far!

Struggling to figure out the surfing deal on these older boats! I know it can be done but just can’t get a lot of push!

setup:

400lbs Bow weight

900lbs in right locker

900lbs in left locker

Mission Delta 2.0 (not sure it’s set right)

ant advice would help!

I just got a 2001 Sunsetter VLX this year and this is my setup:

- 1500 lb "enzo" fat sac running from portside locker under the seats to the ski locker

- 400ish lb ski locker

- No wedge

- Get a few people sitting in the bow and portside corner seats

Can only surf on the regular side and it is listed pretty heavily, but it throws a nice wave. Curious to see if a wakeshaper will make any improvement while it is listed.

I am 6'3".  Driver only, no gear.  No exposed ballast, all on switches because a pump over the side is ghetto.  If you want that, you need to do the following:

- Wedge (mine is a floating wedge, but floating or manual is fine)
- 1100lb bags in each rear locker
- 380lb bag under the port seat
- 500+ bag in the ski locker
- Under-seat bow bag
- 100lbs lead in the nose
- 100lbs port, 100lbs starboard of lead between the hull and interior, just in front of the locker bags
- 200lbs lead under the bow filler cushion
- Cheap suck gate:  https://www.shapethewake.com/
- 10.7 MPH in this pic
- 15" prop, FAE with splash deflector

Ends up being ~3400lbs in total ballast.  I have moved 50lbs rear starboard lead to under the bow filler and run 11 - 11.2 since this picture and like that a little better.  Good push throughout the entire wave.

Or you can do what others suggest and get a lesser result.

About what I did on my ‘01. And yeah. The wave was great. Goofy was even better. :)

Will a 1235 not push all that weight?

Can you post pics of where your pumps are mounted?

Did you do a thread on the install?

I'm guessing a 1235 would push it.  Don't know - only reason to buy a 1235 is if you find one cheap used; they are an old-school suggestion and so many more options available now in the 15" range.

Pumps are mounted on the walls of the Vdrive area.  I'm sure I have a pic, but not much to it.

No thread.  I've ran my setup for a while now, just tweaking with lead.

Running 900's in the rear, you will need at least 650-750 in the bow.

In my '01 VLX, I ran 750's in the rear with a 650 in the bow using a Nauticurl. It was a really good wave.

Once we added one of these under the surf side seats in the cabin, the wave got even better:

You could add lead instead.

You will need more than 400# up front though or I bet that boat is almost standing straight up at 10-12 mph.

Yes, I have a used 1235. I haven't tried to surf this season because I don't think I have enough ballast yet, but can definitely feel a difference with the 1235 over stock. Specifically what prop are you using?

Care to post some pics of your setup? I'm specifically interested in seeing your intake plumbing and pump mounting. Would save some time for those of us with the same boat. I guess your batteries aren't in the lockers? Did you have to do anything like move your fuel vent?

Are you able to post which bags you bought and the setup write up.

I'd like to purchase this all in one go and set it up properly for the summer.

Thank you
