Gauges ???

Recommended Posts

My boat is a 2002 Sunsetter LXI. The dash has the standard 3 gauges. A multi gauge, speedo, and tach. The other day when out, about half the time I started the boat, all 3 were dead. The other half of the time, they worked fine. Today, all 3 were dead all day. Where do I start?

The ground bar under the dash.  And tgen pull the gauge panel and check that the connectors are tight.

So, I tested the mdc and some of the readings were inconsistent. I bought a new one and still nothing. All gauges still dead. I checked all the grounds I could find and all look good. If I have one bad gauge, would that cause them all to go dead? If so, how do you test them? Unplug them all and plug in one at a time?

So, I tried plugging in the gauges one at a time and still nothing. Any other suggestions? I checked the main plug on the rear of the engine and all the other plugs near that as well. Is it possible that the engine computer can cause the gauges to fail? Or would the boat run poorly or not at all if that was the problem? Boat still seems to run normal

Do the gauges buzz/ reset when you turn the key?

It may sound odd, but I was having trouble last fall. I unhooked battery and really snugged the connections, and that took care of it for me.

@Badgerski51What were the results of the tests on the MDC in the above linked troubleshooting guide? You mentioned inconsistent but did you follow the guide step by step? It will normally pinpoint your problem.

Also you may want to try running another dedicated ground wire from the negative terminal of the battery to the ground bar under the dash old jeep mentioned. My connections were all tight but I still had a grounding problem that would result in the gauges acting weird depending on what accessories were turned on. The extra ground wire resolved this.

Update.... there’s 2 inline fuses in the wiring just before the mdc. One is on a purple wire going the the larger connector. The other is a red and white wire that goes to the smaller 5 pin connector. I took the fuses out to test continuity. The red and white wire doesn’t have continuity with the power on. So, what is this wire? Where does it go? Anyone have a wiring diagram?
