2003 Monsoon 335 exhaust bubbling for 20-30 seconds when shutoff and hot, temps are normal 160. Does this indicate an issue?

Recommended Posts

Our boat is running fine (solid 160F) after replacing the impeller, tightening hose clamps, replacing the thermostat and making sure the inlet globe valve is all the way open.  However, in between skiers when hot the exhaust blows a few bubbles out the transom that can be heard for 20-30 seconds after shutoff.

Is this normal, and if not then what should I be looking at as an issue?  There are no visible leaks and no temp issues otherwise.  The exhaust manifolds don't look any different than any 16 year old boat, some rusted places where there are "hot spots" but no blistering of paint.

Any advice would be appreciated- thanks!

is this the sound of water bubbling into the exhaust tubes?       Normal for my direct drive to burp a few times as water fills the exhaust tubes and mufflers after stopping.

No, the bubbling is coming from the transom, like there are hot pockets of exhaust or steam that push bubbles out the back of the boat after shutdown when hot.

Normal.  The air in the system has to go somewhere as the water rushes in.  Sounds like the boat had a night of dollar tacos and Coronas but it's totally normal.

Thanks, this is great info!  Does this mean that Malibus don't have exhaust flappers like my old school Supra Comp?  It never gurgled.  At the transom all I see is are chrome exhaust tips, so I guess the water runs all the way into the mufflers and up to the risers to where the waterline is?  I figured there was some type of flapper inside there, but maybe not.

If you had flappers they would be at the transom.  I took my flappers off and replaced them with stainless turn-down tips, and the exhaust is a bit quieter when pulling a skier.  The flappers tend to emit a higher frequency "pop" that the tips don't have.
