Steering wheel revolutions

Recommended Posts

Thank you in advance for reading this. I just bought my first boat (2018 Malibu Wakesetter MLX) and had a  question.

Why does the steering wheel turn, from center, 1 revolution to the right and 2 revolutions to the left?

Thank you!

Maybe because the previous owner (or service tech) did not get the steering rack centered when they set the steering cable sheath in place?  Should be an easy fix.

1. Center the wheel and hold it in place somehow.

2. Adjust the rudder straight (under the engine) using the clamp and threaded rod.

You sure about that?  Typically I would just remove the 4 bolts holding the rack to the helm  Then straighten the rudder by hand and the wheel by hand that they install the bolts again

Steering wheel alignment: when out on the water and in a safe spot, drive straight at about 25MPH. When up to speed note the position of the steering wheel (use tape if to mark position if necessary.)  Hold the steering wheel so that you keep going straight (do not turn). Stop the boat and turn off. Remove the steering rack on the back side of the steering wheel (typically 4 bolts.) Once the box is removed, turn steering wheel straight (or to desired position) and reassemble.

it was brand new off showroom. i got the 2018 because they gave me a good deal and it met my needs.

i'm not mechanically inclined at all.  do you think i'll have to drop it off and have them fix it?

Unless the rack hits the end of its travel well before the rudder does.  I was trying to think about how it was that way in the first place.  Hitting the end of travel after one revolution suggests that it is not the rudder hitting the end of travel that is the problem.

I've taken boat in twice now and they've attempted to re-align the steering wheel/rudder.

Does anyone know why this is so difficult?

I ask the Malibu shop and they say it's an easy fix but it's not getting adjusted properly.  It's not turning out to be an easy fix.  They have the boat right now and I'm like hey can you please fix it?

Hope they can get that adjusted.  My 2016 has ~2 turns to lock one direction and ~3 1/2 turns to lock in the other.  Didn't dawn on me that it was incorrectly aligned.  Now go me thinking.  Did know know it could be adjusted  for same amount of wheel turn in both directions.

I do think you should have more revolutions to the left. You need to counter the prop rotation. Right @TenTwentyOne?

This.....

because of prop rotation, and rudder offset, the rudder needs to turn at a sharper angle to the left, in order to maintain equal steering (Actual turning ability of the boat) in both directions.

if your steering was set for equal rudder angles, and equal turns to lock from center, the boat would steer much sharper to the right while in use. You would also have a very hard time getting the boat to turn to the left at all, if the starboard gate was deployed.
