Need some help with fule pump no power

Recommended Posts

Hello All.  My 2005 waksetter has lost power to the fuel pump.  It ran fine for an hour then stalled.  After restart, it idled for about 10 seconds then stalled again.  RPM's were erratic. idle was rough.  oil indication came on briefly.

Then no start.  It would turn over but no ignition.  Got towed in.

Now there is no start and the dash flashes "ECU".  There is no power to the fuel pump.  I do not hear the precharge at ignition on.

I have run the gammit of parts.  New battery, fuel filter, IAC, TPS, changed the inline fuses and the fuel pump relay.  The only things left I would think is the ECM (big ticket) and the fuel pump itself.  Maybe wiring problem but have not found the smoking gun there.

I was reading the threads here and saw maybe try the oil sensor.  I went to auto parts store and found it is difficult to cross reference form the Indmar part.

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

John

If you found and replaced the fuel pump relay, it's one of the other 2 located near the ECM behind/under the middle rear seat.

I think 2005 is MEFI 4?  I don't see a relay for the ECM on the wiring diagram.  Dumb question but the main engine breaker isn't tripped is it?

RELAY IGN.

There's a relay for each fuse. Starter, Fuel Pump and ECM (Ignition).

isn't the ignition relay for the ignition system (spark)?  I thought it's the ecm that tells the ignition circuit to fire, not that ignition turns on the ecm?

Ignition Relay turns on the ECM. That occurs when you turn the key to the On position. The when you turn the key further to start the boat, that action triggers the starter relay, which turns over the engine. Once the engine is turning over and the ECM see's the Crank Position Sensor moving and it sees air flowing, it will trigger the fuel injectors and the ignition system and the boat starts. The ECM also sends the signal to the fuel pump relay to run. That's why he's not getting any output TO the fuel pump. If the ECM doesn't power up, it never tells the fuel pump relay to kick on.

Found this. You can see that the IGN relay outputs to the fuse panel, then D feeds down to J2-19 in the ECM which is noted below as Ignition Feed.

Thanks totally learned something!

so want to verify that the ign relay is closing. I guess also check those fuses.

Where can I find main engine breaker?  Also, I will swap out ignition relay.  Maybe find smoking gun there.

Should be on the side of the ECM bracket.  Port side.

Had my fuel pump relay kick the bucket this weekend.  Luckily it was Sunday and after we were done riding, but frustrating to have to diagnose on the water and try to get back in.  Isolated the issue and used the set of jumper cables on the boat to hot-wire the fuel pump to get back to the dock.
