Need help with repairing shaft seal on 04 LXI

Recommended Posts

Hello Crew

I have an 04 sunsetter lxi with a 340 monsoon. It is taking on too much water so I am assuming it is from the seal around the propshaft. The shaft looks like it goes thru a box with a bunch of screws in the top... I have only changed an older boats seal(made of rope) so I am looking for some feedback.

I don't know what tools and parts I will need or if there is a special process.

Thanks

Identify where the leak is first.  Lift up the floor access panel and look at the shaft where it goes through the packing nut.  If the water isn't coming in along the shaft itself,  then see below.  If the water is coming in along the shaft and leaking out the front of the nut in a volume commensurate with what you're accumulating in the bilge, you can probably ignore the box with the screws in it.

Search HDS repair...my 2 cents is this if you're serious about a permanent solution: http://www.everglass.org/shaftlog.htm

Hopefully this isn't the problem.
