Gauges down ...but not out!

Recommended Posts

When dewinterizing my '03 SS LXI, I discovered my multi gauge and speedo were down and not responding.  After all the posts I've read regarding failed gauges and failed mdc/mmdc units, I was afraid I needed to replace either the MMDC (I have the Gen III MMDC, not the Gen II MDC) and/or the gauges.

First thing I did was check the obvious connections and fuses - battery terminals, in-line fuses, cannon conn, etc.  After reading a bit more and learning about the TRD-Medallion conversion kits sold by Ron at skiboatpartsonline.com, I decided to give him a call.  After a bit of discussion, he gave me some good pointers on trouble shooting to narrow down the problem - most valuable was the two power pins & ground on the 24-pin input connector to the MMDC.  After discovering I had good constant power to the MMDC, but no power on the second power pin (hot when on), I jumpered the two wires and my gauges came to life.  The good news:  no gauge or MMDC replacement required.  The bad news:  a wiring problem to trace down...    Another call to Ron with more insight on the hot-when-on circuit and with a little luck I was able to isolate the issue to a corroded connection at my kill switch which appears to be resolved for now.

My key learning, and it may be obvious to many - do your homework and make sure to diagnose and isolate your issue before dropping coin on what appears to be an obvious issue.

Also, a huge call out to Ron at skiboatpartsonline.com.  He was extremely helpful, didn't seem bothered with my multiple calls and interruptions, and was instrumental in helping me resolve this issue.  He could have easily convinced me to go the other route and replace my gauges/mmdc with one of his kits.  What a standup guy.
