2008 21 SLV - V-Drive transmission oil change

Recommended Posts

I'd like to change my transmission / v-drive before I start the season. I'm comfortable changing the oil, but having an issue determining what exactly I need to do.

I'm confused as to when I look at the v-drive, I see two dip sticks. But do they each take different types of ATF?

Here's a photo... And yeah, it's dirty, I know. Any tips on how I could clean this area up?

On my ‘10 I typically bought a gallon of the store brand Dex/Merc to change both. The dip sticks do not get screwed into their respective housings to check the fluid level. Just pull them, clean them off, reinsert, pull out and check the level. I use regular dish soap and water and let it slosh around. Stiff bristle brush and rags.

For clean up spray everything down with Purple Power let it sit a few minutes and spray it down with a water hose. Its amazing what that stuff will do. Just cleaned my bilge this week.

I just did this on mine yesterday.  I used a mityvac pump to pump out the old transmission fluid.  For the dipstick closest to the stern I sucked out about 1 and 3/4 bottles worth.  The new ATF I bought came in 946ml bottles (I'm Canadian so is that a quart for you US brothers?) so that is what I am referring to.

For the dipstick closest to the bow I got about 1 bottles worth out.

I did one dipstick at a time and measured what I sucked out and then put the same amount of new ATF back in, then moved on to the next dipstick.

It seemed really easy.  The longest part was waiting for the old fluid to get sucked out (my pump may not be working as good as it used to)

They each take the same type of ATF.  Mine says Dexron III/Mercon

Got it!

Yeah, I noticed they both say ATF, but on some other posts I found, someone mentioned that one toke sae-30 and the other was Dexron III. Maybe they have a different transmission/v-drive?

How much did you get out of the other dip stick?

Re-read my post...I did put how much I got out of each one.

Looks like you have the same transmission as me (ZF 45 IV).  Manual says Dexron III or Mercon in both dipsticks and 2.12 qts in main gearbox and 1 qt in vdrive.  I put in the same amount I took out so I didn't overfill.

You did posts how much you got it, my bad, I overlooked it.

Thanks for the pdf on the engine, that's super helpful.

FWIW, I would recommend that, whatever you use to suck out the old transmission fluid, measure it!  And, do each unit separately.

I pour the old ATF into an empty clear plastic bottle (2L size works well).  I mark the level on the side of the bottle with a Sharpie pen.  Then I dump the old stuff out and refill to line with new ATF.

I use a long funnel to pour the new ATF into the main unit (rearmost on your boat), and then again on the v-drive unit.

Its a real PITA to pour, measure, pour, measure, pour, measure . . . .  Trust me on this!  Just pour back in exactly what you took out and you'll be good to go.

Ended up doing that, transmission oil changed 👍
