Got our 7 year old up surfing yesterday

He is doing great.  My wife is the one that gets in the water with all the kids, good on you.  My daughter was 8 and around 60lbs last summer.  I found even with the proper sized board it was too hard for her to ride with much a wake.  She was constantly on the tail of the board and then would lose control.  I found that stock ballast with the Go Surf Assist on the skim setting was just right to get slack while being somewhat neutral on the board.  I think your wave was pretty close, maybe slow down a tiny bit.  I bet if he squared his shoulders to the wake he would take right off.  I am always trying to help my daughter square to the wake instead of riding it like a wake board.

This makes me want to get out more than anything.  Hopefully this weekend.

We got him up! Sorry for the vertical video. My wife's friend was recording it since I was in the water with him. Very cool moment. He was up for a good couple of minutes and in the video I can see the rope going slack several times. Now we can start working on adding some weight to the boat.

That’s awesome! Congrats! We are still working in my kids 4 and 7... and the 4 YO is more excited to surf with daddy so I think she might do it along before he brother.) Anyway, we did get my 8yo niece up last summer and strangely we found my wife’s Ronix board worked much easier for her vs the Phase 5 kids board. The issue is she couldn’t sink the bigger board so we had to hold it in the water for her to get up, but once the boat was moving she was off to the races. It seemed that the bigger floaty board just let he enjoy the ride and get pushed by the wave and work on balance, she tossed the rope and stayed up for about 2 mins each time. So play around with different boards,  we were surprised at what worked best and was easiest. I’m still in search of a kids board that works better than the phase 5 (if one exists.)

I do think I need to bring the speed down to 10.8 or so for him since the boat is unweighted. Until he is at full weight...it probably needs to stay about there. I couldn't change it though since I was bobbing in the water back in the cove! I had to review the video and make changes from there.

I was having the same issue with the board that was correct for his weight/size. My thought...and it ended up working out...was to go with a bigger board that floated better at first to learn and then work back to the new one. I basically thought of it like using a long board vs a short in the ocean. It is always easier to get up on the long board. It worked out! Now if I can get him up on his own I can work with him on technique and getting the rope in from the boat.
