Walter V-drive failure.

Recommended Posts

Had the u-joint between transmission and v-drive expire at 770 hours. 2006 247. 8.1l with 5000# ballast. Surfing with normal setup, and just exploded pulling rider out of water. You can see where the u-joint tried to exit the case as it was flopped around while in gear. No warning signs/sounds and had just checked fluid level before outing. It's a 1.21:1 ratio. I'm lucky that I have a 1:46:1 v-drive sitting in the garage.

Started pulling it out. Had a difficult time getting it off the transmission and had to quit to head to airport. Just need it to come back another 1/2" or so.

The drive side still spins freely, so early assumption is the joint just failed... The gear box may still be ok, so i would have the choice between gear ratio. Going to give 1.46:1 a try... That's why I had purchased the extra one anyways.

Going to switch to Glide dripless shaft seal and install new strut bushings while I'm at it... Had those parts laying around too.

Hmmm, a friend who bought an '06 247 had his v-drive go kablammo last summer.  Very odd, as I don't recall hearing any issues with them except oil leaking.

Wow. Guess I'm not the only one.

was going to say 5,000# of ballast holy cripeys!  I must be lame, I don't surf behind a boat, wakeboard only and still only use factory ballast with no plugNplay system.

The v-drive did not want to separate from the trans, so i decided to take the v-drive off the u-joint housing.

The u-joint coupler was a bit warped and didn't want to release easily without a fight. A 3 jaw puller is the way to go here.

The splines are a bit mangled, so i pulled the output shaft to try to clean it up a bit.

I went ahead and replaced the strut bushings, abd the shaft seal.

Should be able to install new v-drive later today.

Is that the Vesconite bushing?  Where did you source it?

Could be a factor....

I run 4000-4500 pounds in a smaller boat of the same vintage (21.5 VLX) and i have 1370 hours on my walter... Fingers crossed.

New V-drive is in and the wave machine is back in action. Need to switch to a less aggressive prop to match the gear ratio change. 15 x 12 will be replaced with a 15x14.25. Special thanks to Engine Nut for part numbers for tans seal and nut!

You the man,!

if I was presented with the same challenge,  I think I would just start crying thinking about what they were going to charge me !

@TimerbSS   Would like to learn about your prop change.  My 06 247 8.1 had a 1.21 Walter gear box ran a 15 x 12  .105 cup (Acme 2315) My 10 247 8.1 has an Indmar 1.45 gear box. with same prop running 600 more RPM.   Would like your feedback.

I'm at elevation, 5,000 feet, running 3,000 additional ballast.  I don't like the high RPM's I'm running at.

So what let go, was it the u-joint or the v-drive?

it was the u-joint. Same thing just happened on a buddies 247, 8.1, 1.21 v-drive. It was a $6k repair for the shop to do it. (new $3k 1.46 v-drive and they pulled motor and addressed a few other issues as well)

@RoyH you got my name wrong so I didn't get notification. probably too late now, but:

After changing the V-drive to the 1.46:1, my 15 X 12 wasn't happy. 15 X 14.25 wasn't really that much better. 15 X 15.75 was the winner!
