Surf Rack recomendation - 2009 VLX with Illusion XS Tower

I have a 2009 VLX with the Illusion XS tower and just realized I need some surf racks. The racks that came with the boat when I purchased it won't fit a surf board.

I've seen prices all over the board for these and not sure what I should be looklng for. What would you suggest for a decent, but still reasonably priced surf rack for the Illusion XS tower?

Thanks!

You might consider a surf bag over or under your Bimini , check the Watersports gear forum, recent thread on this ,  when you get one that will hold a surfboard, it won’t hokd much else or changing forks to surf only forks gives you same result ,  I have one surf only fork on one of my 4 fixed racks , fits any surf board but nothing else cause is it’s a single fork , instead of a combo fork , and now board is on sun and banging over chop or wakes , boat board , no problem , good board, no no

Thank you both,

granddad55 - I'll check that thread. I do like the idea something that attaches to the bimini top if the board(s) are out of the way.

I will also PM the guy with the surf racks right now. He's looking for $175 for both sets of forks. Does that sound like a fair price?

Here's a couple pics of what I have now. If I purchase those forks, will I simply be able to change out the forks I have on my racks now that are not wide enough for the surf board. Keeping the base I have now that attached to the tower? Obviously I don't know much about this stuff.

Yes if it fits surfboards snd bolts up to yours snd it’s a combo for the middle surf fork and at least one of the other for wakeboard , possibly two wakeboards snd surfboard

I don’t put high dollar boards in racks often  by the way

I have been in contact with the guy that posted the replacement surf forks from that Facebook post above. The problem is the bolt hole do not match up (mine has 3 holes and his has 2), but he said he can modify them to match. Makes me a little nervous.

You mentioned you don't put nice boards in racks. What do you do with you nice boards when not in use? Would you prefer something like the bag from a different thread you mentioned earlier in this thread? The Ronix Bimini Board Bag for $199?

Thanks!

Expensive foam core boards can be easily damaged in racks going over chop or wakes plus the sun heat they shouldn’t bear

I use a cheap ($20) pick up bed cargo net under Bimini ,  most do a mod to Bimini to carry boards on top, but they still are being sun baked,  or the bag you mentioned and other bags that have heat material in them so it can be on top BUT input my board in a surf pocket with heat material and my board was smoking hot ( no thank you !).

so that’s why folks are also installing Corson Piper racks from wakeworld or the really expensive racks that  @Hyperryd and the moderator Hopkins installed to keep them out of sun under Bimini

notice I have a fragile foam core LF Happy pill in our surf fork, but it is no longer our main board and the fin beds are glued in , its on its  last legs so we don’t care anymore

the boards underneath are retail $900

How does the cargo net do at speed? Are the boards secure or moving around?

Cargo net works well. I used it on my 07 with no problems. I put it on the top of the bimini.

Their moving up and down when going over wakes or waves but do well at speed  , but with the older Axis tower has height to give, sitting is zero issues even tall people sitting but tall people can no longer stand straight up under it

again I snake the sock pull cords under Bimini and over cross pole in front and run it back to net intersection under the fins and I tie it off.

Fins are held in by last cross rope of netting and tied as above snd with fins hooked and cord tied no front to back movement  , if cord not tied it still stays in place surfing and possibly Wakeboarding though riding we tie the pull cords

the axis Bimini has very convenient locations on front, side and rear to hook the hooks. directly on front crossing Bimini pole , same for sides , and rear hook loops under  Bimini over tower pole and through cut out by speaker clamp and around tower pole hooking it’s own net cord  under Bimini

You should check out the overhead racks by HyperRyd.  I was tired of having my boards in bags on top of the Bimini, so I got 2 for my boat this year. They keep my Soulcrafts protected, out of the way, and out of the sun.  They are pricy, but really nice!

I contacted Scott at Mission Wake (formerly Star One). Unfortunately, they only have the black powder coated replacement forks. My racks are chrome so I'm not sure how the black powder coated forks would look with a chrome rack.

Does anywhere still sell OEM looking chrome replacement forks?

If not, how do you think black replacement forks would look on the chrome racks? I'm hoping to just get one set of replacement forks so would it look bad to have one side of the boat with black forks/chrome rack and the other side chrome forks/chrome rack?

Thanks!

Does that Ronix Board Bag fit most towers? Do you know if it would work well with the 2009 VLX Illusion XS Tower Bimini?

Only issue would be the tower ball/light, and I'm sure it could be modified to work around those.  Size wise it should fit.

Good boards don't belong in racks.  This is what I am using now: https://www.bakesonline.com/ronix-bimini-top-board-bag-4pc-surf-board-rack-heather-grey-orange.html

Thanks for the link!  Mine arrived today.  Dont know if I'm more excited about its storage potential on the boat or in the garage....lol.  The bag attaches perfectly to the frame of my shelter logic enclosure.

I really like the web design of that...for several uses.  Remember where it came from or what brand?

Oh that’s cool! I have the same shelter, might need to buy one.

Right!?!? I may buy another to have all my boards stored like this.  Being OCD is expensive!

In the past I’ve just taken a board in a board bag and put it between the vertical cross member and the tarp.

How did that work for you?  I've thought about that but was always concerned that I'd damage the tarp or board or both.  I ordered cargo netting as well which I plan on installing between vertical beams to use for lifejackets, boards, wetsuits....etc. but haven't installed it yet.  I just really like how this bag looks and protects boards while stored in the shelter.  I look forward to using it on the boat as well.

Worked pretty good. I only did it with the beginner boards and not the customs.

I also hang a hammock from top cross members to keep the cover when i’m out on the water.
