Which amp do I need

Wyatt

Recommended Posts

I recently bought 4 new waketower speakers for my boat and I’m having Trouble trying to figure out which amp I need to run them. They are 4 ohm speakers and are rated at 250 watt RMS each. They are wired in pairs also. So two speakers are wired together and one set of wires runs down to the amp for each pair. So I have two positive and two negative wires that will go into the amp. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

If you wire them together like that, you end up needing 2 channels (as you stated) which will operate at 2 ohm. On each channel you want ~500watt RMS @ 2 ohm. You can get an amp that is higher than that, and de-tune it if needed.

For example, a Wetsounds SYN-DX2.3 HP, which does 2 Ohms - 600W x 2 would fit the bill.

If these where purchased new, it never hurts to consult the retailer, on what amp/wattage is a good fir for the speakers. If picked up used, then check with the manufacturer for a suggestion.

If that 250 rms is a realistic rms and not an over inflated number from the marketing dept, then I like boardjnky4's suggestion. 600W rms x 2 @ 2 ohm, nets you 300W rms to each pod. Its almost never a bad thing to have some head room wattage wise.

agreed with the above.  My one opinion I was going to give is the wattage tip that MLA gave.  Many brands out there, many high powered wattage amps with terrible distortion levels.  I have found out that over powering any of the components I have bought allowed me to turn the gains down which lowered distortion output.  However, making sure it's quality brand at the same time.

Do you know if they are wired in series or parallel?

If they are in series, you will have created an 8 ohm load.

If they are parallel, it would be a 2 ohm load.

Thanks for the reply. They are wired in parallel. Anybody have a good suggestion on an amp to buy for $300 or under? I don’t need a top of the line amp.. Just something reliable and won’t distort sound to bad when turned up.

The least expensive option I can think of is an arc audio ks600.2.  You aren't gonna get it for $300 or under though.  Maybe $500 if your local brick and mortar dealer is willing to deal.  Or you could look used, like this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Arc-Audio-KS600-2-2-Channel-Class-H-Car-Amplifier/283433000869?hash=item41fdec5fa5:g:X~0AAOSwuopckTtX which gets close to your pricepoint.

That used KS600.2 looks nice and the seller has great reviews.

I like the KS for two tower sets in parallel, just start with the gain at 1/2 or less.

Or you'll have more options if you rewire them in series.

be hard pressed to find a 4 chnl amp delivering 200-300 watt rms x 4 @ 4 ohm. Which is = to a 4 chnl 8 ohm bridged. 2 ohm x 2 stereo is hands down going to be the most economical power source.

he wants 250w x 4, not 50?

oops you are right had to go back and read original post.  No way you will find that wattage for that price.  Maybe used and low end brand
