splicing the depth finder wire on 04 vlx?

Recommended Posts

I have the two pin screw on type of wire attached to the puck and connected at gauge cluster.. I accidentally nicked it while doing some upgrades under dash. I read somewhere you could cut wire, strip wire and separate the shielded ground and twist together as well as the positive center wire..the nick was deep enough to effect it as my PP came on let you set speed but never moved from 0.0..

has this worked for anyone? whats the odds it works?

parts, oem type ,no longer available and only upgrades are also going to have to be spliced to keep the readout part  so im thinking a splice of the old one should work use a separate aftermarket Detph finder and im hoping too not do that...

I need to see a photo since I'm not directly familiar with your setup.  You describe "two pin screw on" and "shield... center wire" for the same thing.  The depth finder should use a coaxial cable, and "nicking" it shouldn't really change much.  Also, PP doesn't use the depth finder.  Perhaps you are talking about a paddle wheel speed sensor?

Please show the connector and the nicked cable if you can.

it has big grey plug that pushes two pins into the dash area and screws on..it runs to the puck..it has shielded ground and a center positive wire..it was more the nick it was deep cut i noticed after i cut it out but it effected the speed because PP wasn't registering..i did the splice and will test it next trip out and report back..pictures using 3rd party is hard. i posted on the Malibu axis FB page a few days ago and if you see threads on it here others have had issues finding a new wire/puck/transducer for older boats and have spliced the new one in that was 5 wires but only used two wires..seems like my repair might work but i thought id check here anyway..
