Battery Disconnect.

Recommended Posts

So I took the boat in for the 10 hr service this week. When the service writer hopped in my boat he asked how long my battery switch had been on. He was pretty adamant that I turn it off basically anytime the boat was on the trailer. Is this really necessary? It is a battery. I put it on a charger as soon as I put it in the shop. And I really don’t ever turn it off except for winter layup. What would be the concern to make sure the disconnect is turned off?

Thanks

Parasitic draws with the switch on, may keep the charger in an actual charge mode, rather then entering a float/idle mode. Switch off isolates the batteries from all unnecessary draws, and allows the charger to maintain the batteries, nothing more.

That is what I wanted to know. And makes total sense. He did not have an answer. Just said it is not good you really need to turn them off. Thanks @MLA. always appreciate your input😎

with our 06 vride I learned that lesson. A ballast drain pump switch accidentally got left on and our battery was dead next time out at the ramp. So switch off is definitely part of our protocol.

No, it's not necessary.

On my boat, I actually removed the switch, one less thing to go wrong.
