Hammerhead 383 longevity?

I'm considering purchasing my first Malibu (2005 23LSV with Hammerhead, 490 hrs) but I have some reservations about the engine. The posts on here didn't scare me, but locally there are 4 boats for sale with that powerplant and 3 of them have new engines before 600 hrs. I cast a wider net and the trend continued with about 1-in-4 advertising a new motor. My question: Is this motor a grenade past the 500 mark? I'd like to keep it until 700 or so without putting 25% of the boats value into a new motor.

I'm looking at 2002 and newer LSV's and finding the same thing, new motors with the big block.  Makes me a bit reluctant to touch one.  Very interested in hearing what folks are saying about them.

I hope not... Picked up an 08 hammerhead this fall and I am excited for the snow to melt! Pretty sure mine is over 600 hours and it wasn't advertised as replaced. We will see how it holds up.

They screwed up the winterization and the block froze then cracked would be my guess. People store them in heated shops without draining the water then the power gets knocked out for a couple days and the block freezes and cracks.

Ask them why the new motor

Had an 07 with 770 on it when I sold.  Ran like a top, burned about a quart of oil during 50 hour period and I was pushing around 4500lbs of ballast 80% of the time it was running.  If you can find one with solid maintenance records that show it was taken care of I would not hesitate......great motor!!!
