Repairing/rebuilding teak swim deck

Recommended Posts

Hey all-

I have an '01 sunsetter lxi with wedge.  The swim deck has a sag across the width, partly due to the trapdoor for the wedge making half the boards of the deck non-continuous.  I have started taking the deck apart, and there are only screws holding it together, no glue/epoxy.  I think I can stiffen the deck up significantly if I epoxy or glue all of the wood-wood joints and clamp it flat.  Has anyone else dealt with this issue and what did you do?

I had a local welder make a box frame for the deck made out of 2" x 2" square aluminum tubing, 1/4" thick.  This lifted the deck up 2" which was nice for surfing (no deck interference with the wave) and also eliminated all sagging of the deck.  Holes in the deck support were traced onto the frame and new SS screws were bought with the extra 2" length.  I later powder coated it black to match the support arms.  Well worth the investment.

@hmh800:  Many Malibu's have a fiberglass tongue at the center to act as a platform support.  Unfortunately, they tend to break off due to the way they are attached (screws through the top) and are difficult to replace due to fuel tank and access.  Options to improve the platform vertical stiffness would be to add a beam across the bottom side and / or to add a ski bumper at the transom across the top.  The concept is similar to flipping a 2 x 4 up on edge.  A framework like formulabens is another option.

Thanks guys.  I think I will add some support to the underside, as well as epoxying the two layers of the deck together.  I think that in and of itself will help to strengthen the deck significantly.
