Illusion X Tower Stripped - Ideas?

Recommended Posts

I've been searching around on here and can't find a similar post...

But basically I was installing a set of rev 10s on my Illusion Tower (06 Malibu VLX). As I was bolting it into the tower, it wasn't feeling right. After a little bit of struggling, I realized the bolt was just spinning endlessly. So then I was stuck. Struggled to get the bolt out (and the speaker canister) but eventually got it out to find that the insert is pretty toast.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Looks like a nutsert, basically a rivet with threads.

Can you drill or carefully grind the head off and remove the old one?  Then you would need to put a new nutsert in, so that you can have threads again.

Not quite sure how to get the old nutsert out. It's in there pretty good.

Tap it

Won't really do much because the whole nutsert spins. Thought about filling it with epoxy or something strong then tapping that. But if the whole nutsert will spin then that won't do any good.

Perhaps drill a hole at the juncture between the nutsert and the aluminum to place a screw as a key to stop the nutsert from spinning.  Due to different hardness of the brass and aluminum that will not be easy.  Maybe 2 holes, one in each side, then put some type of rectangular profile key in there?  Then grind the head of the screw/key off and very carefully bolt the speaker on.  You should still have good holding strength.

One way we do it is take a grinder or cut off wheel and remove material on that outer lip.  When the material gets thin enough you can use a hammer and punch and push it into the tower.
