Poor idle on startup. Rich fuel smell.

Recommended Posts

Need help. I have 2005 ride with 5.7 lcr. Never had any issues until last couple trips out. Starts up but has crappy idle for first 10-15 seconds and then clears up. Rich fuel smell and fuel haze coming from exhaust on startup. Runs fine once the idle smoothes out. When engine gets hot it’s harder to start and takes longer for smooth idle. Checked codes and there are none. Any ideas where to start. Checking fuel pressure tomorrow.

tune up as Jeffk mentions.

You might need an injector clean, do you run fuel system cleaner every couple of tanks?

MAF sensor if you have one might need attention. or maybe the IAC.

hard start when hot could be a different thing, but it might also be indicative of low fuel pressure, which could also lead to the rough idle, no atomization of the fuel.

The plugs and wires were changed about a year ago. The cap and rotor and fuel filter were changed in the fall. Only 3 trips out on them. I’m going to check the fuel pressure today and also start for a few seconds and then pull the plugs for possible injector problem.

Check the cap and rotor anyway.  It sounds like this problem started after that work.

I'm not sure if you have cats or not, but if so it sounds like it is only running poorly in open loop mode.  That suggests basics (air, fuel, spark) like others are saying.

I'd probably also grab some carb cleaner and make sure the inside of the throttle body is clean before doing anything else.  Be sure to get into the side passage that has the air sensor and idle control valve.  A clean TB will do wonders for rough idle, and changing a bunch of other parts won't fix it if that is the problem.  Clean first, then diagnose.
