First Time Winterizing

Recommended Posts

Hey folks.... First winter with my 89 Skier. (pardon the newbie questions) Want to make sure Im doing everything properly. Im going to change the oil and trans fliud, lubricate all fittings and removed plugs, and disconnect and store the battery. I will fill the tank with fuel and add the right amount of stabilizer. These tasks seem pretty straight forward enough, but Im curious as to the following:

-- Dex 3 -- Seems to be the common fluid or is there something better to use?

-- What Oil type are you guys using? And your favorite filter??

NEXT

I have read so many different opinions on draining vs using anti-freeze and my head is spinning. So to save from pages of arguments over the matter, Im just going to tell you what I'm deciding. Im going to fake a lake and warm the motor up and then pump 100% AF through the motor until Im confident the STAT has opened and circulated enough through. Then I am going to open all drains on the block and manifolds and take the hoses off confirming its all pink.

List of items I think Ill need:

Dex 3

Oil/Filter

Marine Grease

Fogging Spray

RV anti-freeze

Stabilizer

Am I missing anything?

Sounds like a solid plan!

I never drained the engine after running it with antifreeze though. In my opinion an antifreeze filled engine is better rust prevented  than a drained engine.

I did something similar to what that guy in the video below is doing. Circled the antifreeze until thermostat had opened and engine ran for a while.

Pulling the plugs is probably overkill, but while you’re at it - spray a good amount of WD40 in each cylinder and turn engine over by hand so that the WD40 covers all cylinder walls evenly. Put plugs back in afterwards!

To drain the transmission oil, I use a battery powered spray wand, taken off a round-up bottle. Works like a charm, once the little pump is primed. Measure the amount of transmission oil you suck/pump out and fill up with exactly the same amount of fresh Dexron III / Mercon oil. Will take shy of 2 quarts.

Engine oil - ask 100 people and you’ll get 100 different opinions on it. Same goes for oil filters. Don’t overthink it!

I still use the Shell Rotella 15W40 Diesel oil, WalMart has the gallon for $12.

Take your time, use common sense and you should be fine.

I would go with the engine fogger vs the WD 40 recommendation; I would think the WD would strip the residual oil film off the cylinder walls. WD is not a lubricant. Yes, keep the anitfreeze in the motor!

Warm or not, drain the block and crossover hose before you add the antifreeze.  Make sure it is propylene glycol and not an alcohol based antifreeze; just because it says RV doesn't make it propylene glycol.

Final question:

I cant seem to tell which transmission I have. My boat mechanic told me it should be stamped or have a tag on it somewhere, but I don't see one. Ive looked all around but I still cant see it.

I need to know which tranny fluid to use and apparently, different trannys take different fluid. Wouldn't want to use the wrong stuff. ANy thoughts?
