Is my raw water pump supposed to leak?

I have seen water coming out of the gap in the middle of the raw water pump.  I don't think it did it for a long time but is this normal?  I have a 99 VLX.

Mine doesn’t leak...I think the only thing that is acceptable to “leak” is the packing nut on the drive shaft. There is a seal on the backside of the raw water pump facing the engine that is most likely tired. If it’s a slow drip, I wouldn’t let it bother me.

Bad, replace it.

mine went out a few seasons ago. Didn’t realize it and boat would go into limp mode from getting to hot. Had a bad gage also.

i think it took me about an hour to replace.

www.oringsandmore.com part number 16x28x7 Buna-n oil seal.  I bought a sack of ten of the seals and have fixed three pumps so far.  The bearings are always good, just the seals that start leaking.  No need to buy a new pump.

Remove the pump and impeller, put it in your vise, gently drift the shaft out (with the bearings, as I recall).  Tap the old seal out, tap a new one in, tap the shaft back in (remember to put the o-ring back on the shaft in the right place; it keeps the water dripping off the shaft instead of running into the bearings).  Ready to install on the boat in five minutes.

Mine started leaking at the back as well after about 550hrs.

I read a lot about replacing that fore mentioned seal (mostly on the Mastercraft forum), even found a PDF on how to there, but also read of premature failure of these replaced seals, so I decided to just replace the whole pump, as I needed a new impeller anyway.

I bought the new one from Marine Parts Source in Marysville, MI. It came with the impeller already installed. I had to paint it black though, as it came in raw bronze finish.

I can buy a whole bunch of prematurely failed seals for $160.  Eventually the shaft will wear a groove, but the trick is to replace the seal at a slightly different depth to avoid the groove.

Honestly, this job is simple to do and the seals are cheap.  SKU #OS16287.  $1.75 each.
