Strainer, flush kit type and placement on 02 Response - additional flushing questions

Looking to add a strainer and flush kit.  The Perko flush kit doesn't have a strainer, the Indmar strainers don't have a shutoff for flushing.  Open to suggestions given the current flow of my raw water intake 90 and later path.  This is the common Indmar with 90 degree but they have a straight one at inboard online.

Thinking I shouldn't add another 90 degree turn.

This shutoff could be worked in I suppose.

One question, do the Sherwood in-line have to be vertical, as they would work by gravity? I don't have space for that.

Also, I've been flushing with salt-away and similar. Just bought barnacle buster.  Does anyone find this process effective/harmful? I've seen mention in the forums on "backflushing" and wonder if that would help. I'm on salt/brackish water.
