Throttle rebuild '01 Response

Recommended Posts

The throttle on my '01 RLX is a little stiff.  It's not nice and smooth in and out of gear like they are new.  I figure I'll replace throttle and shift cables and all barrel connectors.  Anything else I'm missing?  If I managed to remove the whole thing, I'll probably give it a good cleaning too as the neutral clicker is a bit sticky also.  I noticed I could go from forward to reverse without it catching if I moved the handle quickly.

Anyone ever rebuilt one of these?

Definitely remove the entire mechanism, as it's not hard at all, just remove the 2 cables and your'e free.  Take a picture of where they are in terms of number of threads, as it could screw up your neutral switch.  I inspected mine and was surprised how beat up the barrel connectors were.  I removed all the pieces and cleaned and greased.  Having the plastic piece out allowed me to thoroughly clean it and replace the friction spring.  The spring for the neutral was way too strong in my opinion, so strong that with wet hands it was impossible to use, so I removed the spring and tried to find an alternative but ended up modifying the existing spring to make it easier.  The neutral lockout spring is probably an easy replacement too.  Only thing left in the loop is cleaning/greasing the rudder assembly if it is remains stiff.
