Replacing the ignition switch

Recommended Posts

Lost my one key for my 2003 vlx and need to replace the ignition switch.  Bake's is closed today... so was considering running to an auto parts store.  Would really any 4-post ignition switch work for this?  Any issue or problems that could arise from using anything that isn't the exact replacement part?

As an aside, was considering putting in a push button start, instead of a keyed ignition.  Anybody done that before?

I bought one of these on a Sunday afternoon last month, it's only 3 position, but I never used acc position anyway.  Just wired it to the run position.  And there's always a 20-25% order online, pick up in store, coupon available.

I'm going to wire mine to a switch, where the key hole is now, and a button to start. I did that to a few of my past cars and worked great. Pretty easy on the boat since there is no anti theft wheel lock to override.

Would either of the stated options work on a 1992 Malibu Echelon?
