Engine is losing oil

Recommended Posts

I have a 2001 23 LSV and notice today a pool of oil in the bottom of the boat.  I checked the dipstick and could not get a reading.  I lost probably 3-4 quarts in the bottom of the boat.  Any thoughts where I could be losing the oil?  I looked around and could not find any place dripping oil.  I wonder if it could be my drain hose off the bottom of the engine.  Has anyone had a similar issue?

Rust hole in oilpan would be my guess.

I agree.  It's common for debris to collect between the hose fitting and the bottom of the oil pan.  This keeps the pan wet in this area causing rust.  Mine did, but rusted only about half way through.

Yikes!  I was afraid it may be something like that.  If it's a rust hole in the oil pan, does the whole engine need to be pulled to replace the oil pan?  If so, my boating season may be done.

Yes, needs to be removed Not a huge task if that is the issue.

no, you don't have to completely remove.

you can pivot the engine around the front motor mount after removing the rear motor mount PLUS lots of ancillary support stuff.

look into the oil filter, first, and don't overlook the possibility that there may be TWO oil filter gaskets (one from the last filter that is causing issues), as @H2ORat suggested.
