got an oil leak

Recommended Posts

I took the Bu out yesterday and noticed a burning smell. I opened the engine hood and there was smoke. I have an oil leak that obviously was burning once the engine got hot. It all went away after a few minutes. I inspected the valve covers and didn't notice anything. Where else would the leak be coming from? TIA

I had slightly overfilled my transmission when I did all the fluids at 30 hours.  Some fluid came out, presumably from a vent, for a while, and it always smelled.  Might be something like that.

It seems like if it is smoking it should be a little easier to locate the source of the problem.  The only place on the engine that should be hot enough to smoke oil is the exhaust manifold right at the head.  Check that valve cover gasket again, especially the bottom lip.  Oil will seep out and run directly down the head and smoke off as it nears the manifold.  If in doubt, change the valve cover gaskets anyway to eliminate that as a potential source.
