LY6 Thermostat

Recommended Posts

Do any of you have the LY6 motor?  Do you know where your thermostat is, do you have a remote thermostat by chance?

My boat has held a steady 160 degrees since I've had it.  It acted up end of last year running cooler then was back to normal this year & now it's running cold again.  My only guess is all the algae in our water has perhaps stuck it open or it just needs to be replaced.  I have the new thermo & gasket in hand.

The problem is the thermostat is not where Indmar says it is & Indmar / Engine Nut has no idea where else it could possibly be & are scratching their heads too.  So, anyone by chance know of a possible place it might have been installed?  It makes no sense, I've taken everything apart a hose connects to & there is nothing, there is nothing in the block where it should be.

Since it seems I might not find this damn thing, is there any harm in just putting the thermostat I have where it belongs?  I know it's a bandaid & would love to find where the heck the existing one is but I don't see it happening.  If Indmars confused, I am sure as heck not gonna figure this out without some help...

If there’s nothing in the hole where the thermostat is supposed to be I would guess that maybe somebody messed up and didn’t install one in the first place. I’ve never heard of a remote thermostat but I suppose anything is possible though.  If this is the case I can’t imagine the harm in putting one in there.

When I saw it was you posting this the first thing that came to my mind is that dirty lake!

It seems less weedy but really dirty this year.  Too bad we got about a week maybe two of water left.  I'm gonna pop the thermo where it belongs and what happens.

Do you have closed cooling?  If so, the thermostat may be installed at the input to the heat exchanger.

No just raw

Brining this back from the dead.  Last year I threw a thermostat in, supposedly the correct one verifying with serial number & Indmar.  Boat immediately over heated, could hear water boiling in the block.  Took it out, all was well except the temp was still 160 while under load, drop to 120 idling around but road around fine, pulls surfing fine.

This summer, even in 100 degree heat the boat doesn't get over 140, headers are cool to the touch.  The heater pushes hot air, wouldn't it be cold if the thermos was stuck open?  Getting ready to sell & would like to find a fix before someone else buys it.  Engine nut is at a loss & I'm not going to trust the dealers round here on something so easy to change made complicated by the symptoms.  Killing me!

Through all my digging it's come to my attention that Malibu owners probably had the L96 engine, which is basically the same.  with that, anyone have heating / cooling issues on that motor?  Bout to try & drilled thermostat & see what happens.

Air leaks, do they matter on raw water?  How do you trace them down?

Absolutely air leaks matter and can cause overheat problems.  Pull each hose from the inlet to the raw water pump and reseat and clamp everything properly.  You can use goop if you really want to make sure you aren't leaking air, but you shouldn't need it.  I have a friend who chased an overheating problem for a long time until he finally checked his inlet hoses.  It doesn't take much air to cause a lot of problems.
