Cutlass/shaft play

Recommended Posts

I replaced the cutlass bearing last spring 2017. After replacement I noticed a slight amount of play, 1-2 thousandths likely, did not measure however because the shaft felt fine but I didn’t mic it. In retrospect I should have. Probably has about 60 hours on bearing and I noticed I have what seems like about the same play I had before replacement. I measured with dial gauge. 4-6 thousandths (between prop and strut) depending on how hard I lifted up and down on prop (2-3 thousandths forward of strut). I used the vesconite bearings from ski dim. Not sure if I should be too worried about it but looks like I will be replacing bearings and shaft to fully fix this little issue. Any ideas, thoughts? Also does anyone have the measurements for the correct shaft length for a 2003 ss Lxi? Should I order from marine hardware direct or ski dim? Do I need to replace the trans coupler as well? Thoughts/ info from your vast collective knowledge would be  very helpful. Thanks
