The bigger plate allowed me to get outside the busted plywood holes altogether.

interesting thing is that this is HPDE and would think it wouldn't do this with that type of material.  Only reason I knew it was HPDE is because I got my new skins from Malibu Gabe and had to remove the upholstery to send to him.  Just a bit surprised that these screws come out so easily with HPDE/Seaboard.

Maybe they updated materials as mine was a 2004 but it was definitely plywood.  I think the problem is the screws are so short to keep from passing through to the sun pad so there isn't much grabbing.  I don't think it matters what material is under there is only 2 threads are securing it.

I had the same issue with my 2008 and my first attempt was to built the larger plate but I noticed that it was starting to pull through also. By chance I was near the factory for work and took my hatches by Malibu and the guy just added the plastic screw in anchors like others have suggested. It has been working great every since with the original brackets.

In your situation, I would build a large bracket base and use the plastic anchors.

Had the same issue on my 2011 RLXI

The material used in the base of the 2011 is that aluminium honeycomb with bonded blocks where the piano hinge is on the side but nothing where the strut mounts are.

The larger plate idea to spread the load lasted a few seasons.

Peel the carpet back from the latch on the underside & you can see the machined honeycomb.

Drama you have is when these get soaked & heavy, the aluminium starts to corrode, then you get delamination & end up with a saggy trunk lid

End result, pulled them & stripped them, remade panels out of carbon fibre with a reduced thickness at the edges so we could still get staples through.

managed to get the old skins back on as we made the new panels about 1/4" smaller to allow for this.

Looked at HDPE as this would have been easier but was not keen on the flex as these get heavy when soaked.

If I were to do this again, would go the HDPE & maybe mill the edges to keep some thickness in the middle but keep the edges about 1/2"

maybe just bond/screw 2 layers to get the reduce edge thickness

Perhaps something done by a previous owner?  I don't believe Malibu has done any wood in boats since the early 90's.  I've never found a single sign of wood in my '01.

that was what I was thinking as well.  I know mine are HPDE since I removed the skins and foam myself last winter.
