long, long term storage

Recommended Posts

I'm going to have to store my boat from October 2006 to about April 2008. The boat is located in central Texas and will likely stay in it's current all-enclosed storage facilty (non-climate controlled). Another option is storing it at my father-in-law's house under an awning but without sides (for free).

I know I will:

- have the engine block drained

- disconnect the battery

What I'm wondering is should I have:

- the engine fogged?

- take the cushions out?

- leave the drain plugs in or out?

- put Sta-dri pellets throughout the boat?

- drain the oil from engine?

- full tank of gas with fuel stabilzer?

- empty the fuel tank?

- anything else done?

Drain block, pull battery and put in climate controlled area (got anyone who can put it on a charger every couple of months ?), wouldn't hurt to fog the engine, I'd leave the drain plugs in if it's inside, I'd change the oil and keep it full, stabilize the fuel, and make sure the trailer tires are full of air.

Also wouldn't hurt to make sure it's vac'd and clean on the outside. Do you have a breathable cover?

I agree with Edwin except I would drain the fuel out of the tank and run the engine until it's out of fuel/and fog it. That's a long time to expect fuel stabilizer to work.

If you can't get the battery charged every so often you just as well write it off.

If you can get it charged, see if they will 303 the vinyl too. Those three things will probably be your biggest problem if it's stored in a dry place.

OR...bring it to me and I'll keep it in running order for you. I would need to be able to put 50-75 hours a year on it to keep it running right. Biggrin.gif

I have stored my car a few times and this is just my 2C. Your storing it for 18 months so I would.

Drain fuel, add stu lube and dry gas.

change oil and filter.

fog eng, drain water and add antifreeze to block. Envirmental safe stuff.

remove battery have some one put it on a change every now and then or just give it away. Batterys don't last long when not used much or drained 100% a few times.

putting sta dry pellets is a great idea and see if some one can change them out every so often.

Raise the trailer off the ground and put jack stands under the axle. This will keep the tires off the ground and from dry cracking, forming a flat spot.

Spray all cables, chains or other moving parts with wd40 so that its stays loose.

put rat bait out and other insect killer stuff.

taking some cushions off is a good idea so it can breath.

I know I'm missing some thing. Hope this helps.

I argued selling it and buying an 08'. The numbers actually made sense to do that but I have lost that arguement.

The cover is the factory breathable cover. Also have a torn-up shipping cover but planning for a 23ft LSV but I'm planning to throw that away.

I could take the battery out and have my father-in-law trickle charge it every now and then. The enclosed storage facilty does have electricity but I don't trust it.

I will wash/wax/303 prior to storage. One thing I left out is the 100 hour service will be done just prior to storage also.

I guess what I'm most worried about is the fogging and other fluids.

There is a slight chance my wife will use the boat while I'm out of the country next summer, but I doubt it.
