Check the cannon plug at the engine.  Heck, check all the connectors you can find.  It sounds like just an open circuit on the data bus, and it is most likely at a connector.

Ok, so it could be a bad ground also, since CAN is a one-wire bus (IIRC).  Check grounds at the engine and helm.

"Check" means break the connection, inspect the part, and make the connection again.

This. Plus there are other items on the can circuit that will affect it.

Can is two wires, can_h, can_l and a ground reference.

Our Malibu started up fine then we reversed out of the boat slip and we’re idling while kids were getting ready. Then boat shut off and warning signal said “Loss of CAN signal”.

about to check connections around engine. Did anyone find a solution to this? If so was it a quick fix?

We had the ‘loss of can signal’ message today, after our boat was summarized by our dealer.  Engine would not turn over at all, and the error message would display.   Turned out to be out the lanyard kill switch was in the off position.  Moved to the on position and the engine started right up.
