Surf Gate and Slalom- Chasing Ghosts?

In looking for a VTX, I ran across a 2013 that doesn't have surf gates. I talked to the owner said they didn't get it because it interferes with the slalom wake. I am wondering if there is any truth to this, and if so, how much of an impact? I am guessing maybe a bit of additional spray at short line, but for most skiers, I'm assuming this isn't an issue that is noticeable?

Never heard that. They are all the way out of the water when the boat is on plane. I’ve skied a 2015 with surf gate and it had zero impact to the wake. Same on the new ones too.
